Together, We Empower Immigrant Families Impacted by Disability

El Grupo Vida stands alongside Spanish-speaking immigrant families raising children and supporting loved ones with disabilities. Rooted in cultural understanding and lived experience, the organization exists to bridge gaps in access, advocacy, and belonging—ensuring families are not left to navigate complex systems alone. At the heart of this work is a belief that culturally responsive support, sustained by community and philanthropy, creates lasting change.

Culture as the Foundation of Impact

El Grupo Vida’s mission is deeply shaped by cultural roots. Language, family structure, shared traditions, and mutual care are not secondary considerations—they are central to how programs are designed and delivered. By honoring these values, El Grupo Vida builds trust and connection, empowering families to access information, advocate effectively, and strengthen their communities.

The organization’s founders, Ellie Valdez-Honeyman and María Castillo, created El Grupo Vida after confronting firsthand the lack of culturally relevant support available to Spanish-speaking families. Their experiences as mothers revealed systemic barriers that were not merely administrative, but cultural and linguistic. What began as grassroots action grew into a trusted community organization grounded in respect, dignity, and shared leadership.

Research confirms what these families have long known: community-driven, culturally grounded approaches foster deeper engagement, stronger advocacy, and more equitable outcomes for families impacted by disability.

Programs Built With—and For—Community

El Grupo Vida’s programs are intentionally shaped by community input and lived experience. Support groups and workshops provide safe, peer-led spaces where families share knowledge, build confidence, and develop advocacy skills. These gatherings are more than educational—they are relational, reinforcing the idea that families are not alone.

The Resource Center serves as a bilingual hub where families receive guidance, referrals, and culturally responsive information spanning early intervention, education, healthcare, and life-stage transitions. The Exchange Boutique complements this work by addressing immediate material needs while reinforcing dignity, mutual support, and community care.

Evidence consistently shows that culturally and linguistically adapted interventions lead to higher participation, retention, and effectiveness—particularly for Spanish-speaking families navigating disability systems. El Grupo Vida’s approach reflects these findings by embedding culture and language into every layer of service and advocacy.

Advocacy That Reduces Barriers

Systemic barriers—such as limited bilingual resources, confusing processes, and lack of culturally competent providers—continue to exclude immigrant families from essential services. El Grupo Vida confronts these challenges through direct advocacy, education, and trusted partnerships.

By offering bilingual materials, culturally responsive navigation, and direct connections to service providers, the organization equips families with the tools and confidence needed to assert their rights. This advocacy extends beyond individual families, influencing systems and policies that shape access to education, healthcare, and public services.

Why Donor Support Matters

None of this work happens without philanthropic investment. Donor support sustains the programs, outreach, staffing, and essential resources families rely on every day. Contributions fund bilingual workshops, advocacy efforts, community spaces, and direct assistance—transforming generosity into tangible outcomes.

Families consistently share that culturally aligned support increases their confidence, strengthens their ability to advocate, and fosters a sense of belonging. These outcomes reflect not only effective programming, but the power of donors choosing to invest in equity and dignity.
